My Volunteering Story

Are you a Medical First Responder, Therapy Dog Handler, Youth or Youth Leader, Car Seat Safety Educator, First Aid Educator or Branch / Board volunteer for St. John Ambulance York Region?
    
We really want to hear your volunteering stories of why you decided to volunteer with St. John Ambulance and how do  you volunteer!

Our “My Volunteer Story” photo and video campaign series helps to tell your story! 

This also helps educate the public about how our St. John Ambulance’s Volunteer Community Services serves the community of York Region.

Don't worry, we will step you through the whole process and have examples to show you along the way but deciding to SIGN UP and sharing your story is the FIRST STEP! 

To begin, REVIEW your story format options and download the Interview Questions in advance.

 

This helps you to formulate your response before returning and submitting your brief answers to us in an online form through the My Volunteering Story Form in STEP 3.

 

We also require that you complete and sign a online Photo / Video Release Form in STEP 4 in order to be eligible to participate as an entrant in this campaign.

Step 1 - Story Formats

There are TWO FORMATS you can chose, either through a PHOTO & TXT or VIDEO format and three OPTIONS for us to tell your story:

OPTION 1 - PHOTO & TEXT

We will ask you a series of questions and tell your story through a photo and summarized edited text graphic.

You can either send us few of your own very best photos when you complete our My Volunteering Story Form or through our Online Submission Form or we can schedule a photo session at the York Region Branch on an agreed upon day and time. 

If you decide to submit your own photos, please send us at least 3 photos ensuring:

  • You are the focus in the photo

  • No other people appear in the photo

  • You are in your proper uniform with ID's

  • Female/Male MFR’s - Long hair in duty format 

Your image will be removed from the background on our end to look like these two examples shown here.

 

OPTION 2 - SHORT VIDEO (2m:20s)

We will ask you the same questions and tell your story through a video interview format making a 2m:20s video.

Two dates are required to complete this video, a weekend Branch video shoot (2-hours) and an on location date while the your are on duty (1-hour).

If you decide to tell your story through a Short Video, please ensure:

  • You are in your proper uniform with ID's

  • Your hair and make-up already ready

  • Female/Male MFR’s - Long hair in duty format

Your responses to the interview questions you answered would have already been re-emailed back to you for your reference and a printed copy will be provided on shooting day. 

Each question answer will be filmed separately in multiple takes to make it easier for you.

OPTION 3 - LONG VIDEO (8-10m)

We will ask you the same questions plus a few additional questions along with Specific Role Questions and tell your story through a video interview format making an 8-10 minute video.

This video really helps people understand everything you do in your volunteering role.

Your Long Version video will be uploaded to our Youtube Channel and may also appear on our Community Services web pages. 

Your video will also be edited down to the 2m20s Short Version so that it can also be played on all social media platforms. 

Two dates are required to complete this video, a weekend Branch video shoot (3-hours) and an on location date while the your are on duty (1-hour).

If you decide to tell your story through a Long Video, please ensure:

  • You are in your proper uniform with ID's

  • Your hair and make-up already ready

  • Female/Male MFR’s - Long hair in duty format

Step 2 - Interview Questions

Here are the questions that will appear on our online My Volunteering Story Form depending on the Story Format you wish to tell your volunteering story. Read more about about the Story Formats

FORM SAVE & RETURN FEATURE - Our My Volunteering Story Form will ask you to create an account before beginning. This allows you to time to formulate your responses, save your progress and return at a later time if you do not complete the form questions in one go. Please remember your login and password.  

You can also DOWNLOAD the interview questions to work offline and formulate your response before returning and submitting your brief answers to us on our My Volunteering Story Form in STEP 3.

 

PLEASE NOTE - We are NOT looking for huge essay answers. Just brief direct answers as this will be edited down to fit the text layout OPTION 1 or your answers edited to 2m:20s in the video in OPTION 2.

YOUTH & YOUTH LEADER

  • How old are the youth in your youth unit?

  • Why should youth join our St. John Ambulance Youth Program?

  • What activities do you do with your youth?  (i.e. Drill, Camping, Competitions)

STAGE: 2 – COMPLETE THE CANDIDATE ENTRANT

SUBMIT PHOTO:

Our form will allow you to submit up to 4 photos with your answers to our interview questions.

NEXT FORM:

Upon completing your answers to our interview questions and pressing the form's SUBMIT button, this form will automatically bring you to complete the Photo / Video Release Form.

STAGE: 3 – CANDIDATE ENTRANT SELECTIONS

SELECTION:

Candidates are selected by neutral Branch Staff / Board members based on submitted entrants. With over 600 volunteers, an entrants submission does not guarantee that their story will be shared publicly.

 

ENTRANT:

The entrant who is selected to be featured as a "My Volunteering Story” each month will be contacted by email.

FREQUENCY:

We will be featuring one story a month with the possibility up to two "My Volunteering Story's" depending on submissions and scheduling.

STAGE: 4 – VIDEO SHOOTS

SCHEDULING:

OPTION 2 FORMAT - Two dates are necessary. A weekend Branch video shoot (2-hours) and an on-location date while the volunteer is on duty (1-hour).

OPTION 3 FORMAT - Two dates are necessary. A weekend Branch video shoot (3-hours) and an on-location date while the volunteer is on duty (1-hour).

PREPARATION:

The volunteer is responsible to ensure that their uniform is in order including your ID’s and clean for both days. Sorry, we are also volunteers, so no hair and make-up on set so please come prepared. Female / Male MFR’s, please ensure long hair is put in the correct duty format while in uniform.

 

BRANCH SHOOT:

On an agreed upon weekend day and time, the volunteer will meet at the Branch for their on camera interview

 

ON CAMERA INTERVIEW:

As we know you have put thoughts in your interview answers, these will be made available to you in advance in case you have lost them. These same questions will be asked. See the video examples on our web page to get an idea of what the on camera interview will resemble.

LOCATION SHOOT:

On an agreed upon day, location and time, the volunteer will meet with the volunteer videographer at your duty. We will be following you and taking videos of what you do.

RELEASE FORM:

Anyone which appears in the location shoot will also have to complete an online digital PHOTO / VIDEO RELEASE FORM or their image cannot be shown.

STAGE: 5 – EDITING & CREATION

- One social media SJA Branded graphic with your photo will be created for Facebook and Instagram

- One social media SJA Branded graphic will your photo be created for Twitter

- One 2m:20s video will edited and created for Youtube, Facebook and  Twitter social media platforms

If you have selected to also have a OPTION 1 - Photo & Txt version as well then:

- One social media SJA Branded graphic with your photo will be created for Facebook and Instagram

- One social media SJA Branded graphic will your photo be created for Twitter

- One 8-20 minute and a 2m:20s video will edited and created for Youtube, Facebook and Twitter social media platforms. Your long video our may also be shown in our programs categories on our community services web pages 

 

If you have selected to also have a OPTION 1 - Photo & Txt version as well then:

- One social media SJA Branded graphic with your photo will be created for Facebook and Instagram

- One social media SJA Branded graphic will your photo be created for Twitter

STAGE: 6 – LAUNCH

WHEN:

We will let you know which month you’ll be featured in advance by email so that you can share with friends and family.
